Papua New Guinea Artifact Illustrations
  Papua New Guinea Artifact Illustrations
Rosalie began taking black and white pictures and illustrating artifacts after arriving in Madang, Papua New Guinea in 1972. She took hundreds of photographs before the dealers exported the artifacts out of the country and began to do drawings from both photographs and actual artifacts. She documented people's collections and went into the villages around Madang Province taking photos of what the people showed her. Many of her illustrations were used for educational materials at Madang Teachers College where she worked as an art teacher. Rosalie put together and edited a series of books published by Madang Teachers College. These were used as teaching aids and in primary schools.

There are over 300 illustrations most of which were done with pen on white paper. In section 10 of this group of images an editor's note Rosalie wrote for a traditional arts and crafts book she put together with Madang Teachers College in the 1970's regarding pole carvings is of interest.

A portion of the drawings were done directly onto roneo paper so that the college could print their own teaching materials cheaply with their roneo machine. Some pictures have been given a background colour during the course of this site's design. If you would be interested in future publications of these illustrations, Limited Edition Prints/Reproductions, please see Survey.
