Papua New Guinea Black and White Photographs
  Black and White Photographs
Rosalie Christensen left Australia and moved to Papua New Guinea in 1971 with her children, a cat, a dog, her books and a couple of suitcases. She was employed to teach art at Madang Teachers College. She began taking photographs, collecting data on artifacts and documenting how people made and processed things. She collected, identified and illustrated plants and their uses and gathered traditional stories.

She put together, with Madang Teachers College, several teaching aids for primary schools which used her photographs and drawings. There are over 3,000 photographs.

Rosalie was about 37 when she bought her first SLR camera in 1972. She had begun photo-documenting artifacts in Papua New Guinea, initially with a small Instamatic camera that she used for family snap shots. Realizing that the pictures needed to be better she sought the advice of a camera dealer and bought a second- hand Canon. She used the same camera for all her photos. Eventually it fell to pieces from corrosion and mould - due partly to the tropical climate and heavy use.

All black and white photographs displayed on this website were taken with a Canon FT using Kodak black and white film.
